compelling vision.

Your leadership power key involves creating, shaping,
sharpening and publicizing the vision as you also encourage
people to embrace it, own its outcomes and feed its
possibilities.

POWER KEY-3: “Go For The Gusto!”

Your team will wonder about their priorities every moment of
every day. How will you inform, reassure and coach them?

There are just a few items you should concentrate your
efforts, attention and assessments on - they are your
leadership agenda:

1) Security - health, wellness, safety

2) Wisdom - knowledge, relevance, applicability

3) Power - personal, team, shared, how much

4) Guidance - where, what, when, who, why, what & how

Your leadership power key demands that you adopt the proper
mental attitudes, behaviors based upon rock-solid personal
values and motives driven by your most positive eccentric
forces.

questions reveal the power behind this key.

Can’t you wait to get what you want? Do you loose your patience

into fruits.

If you dig into the ground to find out why you aren’t getting
fruits then you will destroy the whole process.

Don’t rush out. Everything takes time. Just make sure that you
sowed the right seeds.

Your best seed is the positive attitude. If you sow positive
attitude you will reap a tremendous harvest.

Everything you do will amount to something. Every action is a
seed which corresponds to a certain result.

Be careful of what you are sowing of your time, money and
energy. Everything does matter.

Sow good seeds for your dreams now and trust that some time in
the future you will reap the rewards of your efforts.

Leading is an act of energetic purpose - it’s the directing,

focusing, shaping or configuring of energy towards a
desired objective.

Over time and the distance of space, leaders use the
energies available to them to become that instrument
through whom energy propels the group.

Where does that energy come from? It is already present in
many forms and places, specifically it is:

=> inside and outside the organization - generally called
the organization’s environment,

=> a function of an organizational sub-system [usually
configured as a department or section with its own unique
set of policies, processes & interactions] or from outside
agencies that interact with the system,

=> the products, results or energy flows produced by
employees and associates.

What does energy look like? Actually seeing energy with the
naked eye is impossible but with the aid of applied
knowledge, we can see evidence of its effects.

Every manifestation of energy assumes an aspect of the
following forms:

- A physical circumstance or object;

- An intellectual impulse or calculation;

- A spiritual activation or expression;

- A developmental permission or evolution

Skillful leaders sense the truths of energy, they use it to
facilitate, enable, empower or enlighten their people. They
use moments when energy is at its greatest strength to
train or educate people and develop their commitment,
self-actualization and abilities even further.

The 3 elements of leadership power are:

=> Enable or empower people [physical & develop]

=> Enlighten or educate people [intellect or inspire]

=> Energize or elevate people [inspire or develop]

We know that leaders like Jack Welch, Tom Peters, Gandhi,

Your minister of the church of marketing has some words for you to ponder today: if you want to succeed you must show up. Woody Allen has often been quoted - incorrectly - on this subject. What he really said was, “80 percent of success is showing up.”

He was not talking about making a cameo appearance or a movie walk-on. He was suggesting that being there fully focused, giving your best effort and doing it on a consistent basis is the formula for success. Allen knows that most people just try to phone it in. And even then they don’t follow through every time, nor give it their all.

Friend and client Brent Dees says it another way during his Focus Four business coaching sessions. “Do what you say you’re going to do and do it on time. This applies to everything you do in life, from being an employee, a father, a business owner or a friend.”

Let’s consider it from a marketing perspective. I have written and distributed my e-newsletter monthly since April 2002. That’s 52 issues and counting.

Every month, rain or shine, I worry about what to say that will most help my readers in their businesses. Researching the subject and the links follows. Then, writing, editing and newsletter layout come next. Finally, I distribute it and then respond to any reader questions or requests. It takes roughly eight to 10 hours of my time each month and that is really cutting into my naps.

Do I ever want to take a break? Silly question. But this newsletter is my primary awareness vehicle. Every piece of business I have landed can be traced back to the newsletter in some way. Consistently getting it out at the same time each month has paid off for me.

I think about what the president of window blind giant Levolor once said to me, “we can’t afford to do everything from a marketing perspective. But what we do, we can execute violently.”

The bottom line here is this: pick a few things and execute them to the best of your ability on a consistent basis. That’s showing up. Do that and 80 percent of success is yours. We’ll discuss the other 20 percent later. But right now, I need a nap.

At some point in your life have you ever dreamed of being somebody special, somebody big? Have you ever fantasized about being the one who scores the winning goal? Do you remember your childhood dreams of becoming the homecoming queen? How many times have you fantasized of being rich, or successful, or happy in your relationships?

We often dream and have great aspirations about our lives and our future. Unfortunately, our dreams remain just that - dreams. And our aspirations easily collect dust in our attic. Remember the days when you used to say to Mom or Dad “I’m going to be a professional sportsman when I’m older”? Do you remember the comments? How many times did someone say to you “Stop dreaming and start being more realistic”.

This is a sad turn of events in our life. Instead of experiencing exciting adventures in self actualization, we get caught up in the humdrum of living from day-to-day just barely existing. We totally forget what our dreams and goals in life are.

Wouldn’t life be so much better, if only we learned to aim higher?

The most common problem to setting goals is the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking I can’t do this. It’s too hard. It’s too impossible. No one can do this.

However, if everyone thought that, there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human accomplishment. There would be no Richard Branson’s, Donald Trump’s or John F Kennedy’s of the world.

Remember that scientists once argued that the world was flat. When the telephone first came out people said it was an impractical form of communication. Where would we be if it wasn’t for the inventors and explorers of this world who didn’t accept impossible as an answer?

On the other hand, some people suffer from dreaming totally outrageous dreams and not acting on them. Or if they do act upon them they do it without proper planning and with no thought process behind their actions to follow. The result? Broken dreams, and tattered aspirations.

If you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break past what you deem impossible. If you reach too far out into the sky without working towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging on to the impossible dream. You cannot achieve the dream without finding out the reasons why people say it is impossible. Once you understand the reasons, you can work to find a solution to your problems and move on to succeed in life.

Try this exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down some goals in your life. Under one header, list down things ‘you know you can do’. Under another header, write the things ‘you might be able to do.’ And under one more, list the things that that are impossible for you to do.’

Now look at all of the headers. Strive every day to accomplish the goals that are under the header ‘you know you can do’. Tick them when you are able to accomplish them. As you slowly are able to check all of your goals under that heading, try accomplishing the goals under the other header-the one that reads ‘you might be able to do.’

As time goes on you will see yourself starting to achieve your goals. As you iterate through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible suddenly become possible after all.

You see, the technique here is not to limit your imagination. It is to aim high, and start working towards that goal little by little. Set yourself daily/weekly tasks of what you need to achieve. Don’t get disheartened when it doesn’t quite go to plan. Look back at your experiences and learn from them. After all isn’t that what a mistake is, an opportunity to learn?

You don’t have to be one of those who just dream towards a goal. You can be one of the ones who turn their dreams into a reality. What do “they” have that you do not have?

Think about it, if you told someone a hundred years ago that it was possible for man to be on the moon, they would laugh at you. If you had told them that you could send mail from here to the other side of the world in a few seconds, they would say you were out of your mind. But, through sheer desire and perseverance, these impossible dreams are now realities.

Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Nothing could be true. For you to accomplish your dreams, you have to work hard and discipline yourself. But take note that that 1% has to be a think-big dream, and not some easily accomplished one.

Set your dreams and goals high. Commit to yourself that you will do what ever it takes to become a success. Choose to live your life on your terms, not somebody else’s.

Remember the saying, “No pain, no gain”? That is as true as it can be.

So dream on! Don’t get caught up with your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to attain those dreams. As you step up the ladder of success, you will find out that what seemed to be the impossible is not impossible at all. With a little planning, hard work and determination, anything you dream of is possible.

Remember, impossible is just a word. Success is a combination of action, experience, learning and passion. Live your life to fulfill your dreams.

If you want to be a leader who attracts quality people, the key is to become a person of quality yourself. Leadership is the ability to attract someone to the gifts, skills, and opportunities you offer as an owner, as a manager, as a parent. I call leadership the great challenge of life.

What’s important in leadership is refining your skills. All great leaders keep working on themselves until they become effective. Here are some specifics:

1) Learn to be strong but not rude. It is an extra step you must take to become a powerful, capable leader with a wide range of reach. Some people mistake rudeness for strength. It’s not even a good substitute.

2) Learn to be kind but not weak. We must not mistake kindness for weakness. Kindness isn’t weak. Kindness is a certain type of strength. We must be kind enough to tell somebody the truth. We must be kind enough and considerate enough to lay it on the line. We must be kind enough to tell it like it is and not deal in delusion.

3) Learn to be bold but not a bully. It takes boldness to win the day. To build your influence, you’ve got to walk in front of your group. You’ve got to be willing to take the first arrow, tackle the first problem, discover the first sign of trouble.

4) You’ve got to learn to be humble, but not timid. You can’t get to the high life by being timid. Some people mistake timidity for humility. Humility is almost a God-like word. A sense of awe. A sense of wonder. An awareness of the human soul and spirit. An understanding that there is something unique about the human drama versus the rest of life. Humility is a grasp of the distance between us and the stars, yet having the feeling that we’re part of the stars. So humility is a virtue; but timidity is a disease. Timidity is an affliction. It can be cured, but it is a problem.

5) Be proud but not arrogant. It takes pride to win the day. It takes pride to build your ambition. It takes pride in community. It takes pride in cause, in accomplishment. But the key to becoming a good leader is being proud without being arrogant. In fact I believe the worst kind of arrogance is arrogance from ignorance. It’s when you don’t know that you don’t know. Now that kind of arrogance is intolerable. If someone is smart and arrogant, we can tolerate that. But if someone is ignorant and arrogant, that’s just too much to take.

6) Develop humor without folly. That’s important for a leader. In leadership, we learn that it’s okay to be witty, but not silly. It’s okay to be fun, but not foolish.

Lastly, deal in realities. Deal in truth. Save yourself the agony. Just accept life like it is. Life is unique. Some people call it tragic, but I’d like to think it’s unique. The whole drama of life is unique. It’s fascinating. And I’ve found that the skills that work well for one leader may not work at all for another. But the fundamental skills of leadership can be adapted to work well for just about everyone: at work, in the community, and at home.
